R.A. Smith National Provides Site Planning, Civil Engineering and Landscape Architectural Design Services for Chippewa Nature Center, Midland, Michigan
BROOKFIELD, WIS. – R.A.Smith National (formerly R.A. Smith & Associates and its National Survey & Engineering Division) — civil engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture, GIS and 3D visualization consultants — Brookfield, Wis., is providing site planning, civil engineering and landscape architectural design services to The Kubala Washatko Architects for the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland, Michigan.
The project includes an addition to the existing nature center and a new nature preschool. The site plan was designed to minimize site disturbance and impact to existing trees and wetlands and to create a more intuitive, natural experience for visitors to the facility. Three rain gardens, two bio-swales and a dry stream bed were designed to collect, treat and infiltrate storm water. All of the plantings were designed using native species specific to the central Michigan region.
A natural pond was designed at the front entrance that will circulate roof water and rain water, and provide habitat for native aquatic plants and amphibians. There will be an event terrace that overlooks the natural pond constructed with permeable pavers, as well as several open air structures on the site for a bus drop off, bicycle parking, trailheads and a pre-school drop off.
A new parking lot will be constructed with reclaimed asphalt pavement from the site, as well as a new absorption field for the septic system that consists of recycled tire aggregate.
The project team will pursue LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification of the project through the U.S. Green Building Council.
