Employees Lend a Hand in Guatemala
January 2010
Steve Berg, director of transportation, traveled to Tres Cruces in Guatemala to help build a bridge as part of the Wisconsin Professional Partners chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). A Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) student group from EWB designed the the bridge. The EWB group constructed the bridge in about two weeks with a lot of help from the community. Steve has worked on similar projects in Guatemala over the last 10 years and is one of the student group’s mentors.
“Collaborating with the local disadvantaged community and feeling their gratitude is tremendously rewarding.” - Steve
Gary Raasch, senior water resources project manager, traveled to El Aguacate, near Joyabaj, in Guatemala, to help build a bridge with a group from Waukesha. A few weeks earlier, the MSOE student chapter of EWB had started the bridge foundations. The group built formwork and mixed concrete for the bridge beams, deck, wing walls and railings. The bridge will allow many families to daily travel to schools and town during the rainy season when the stream would otherwise be impassable.
“As a first-time volunteer in a foreign country, I was not sure what to expect, but was most impressed by the Guatemalan people. Their friendly attitudes and eagerness to work hard made it a pleasure to work side-by-side with them. It was amazing to experience what many hands could accomplish in a short time with limited tools.” - Gary
Kevin Muhs, co-op student, traveled with Engineers Without Borders-Marquette Chapter to La Nueva Providencia, Guatemala to construct a a solar powered street lighting system for the community. Nueva Providencia has not had any electricity previously. This trip was part of a larger hydro electric and solar project to provide the community with electricity for their homes, school, community center, and clinic.

Madison Mallards Game

R.A. Smith National gathers with clients in the Mallards Duck Pond Suites.

Mallards take an early lead but it wouldn't be enough to win the game.
