Sustainable Design/LEED®

Brico Fund
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

R.A. Smith National provided surveying, sustainable site design and landscape architectural services to The Kubala Washatko Architects for the Brico Fund’s new corporate offices in downtown Milwaukee. The offices are located at the historic James S. Brown Double House at 1122 Astor Street.

R.A. Smith National’s conceptual site design included the identification of low-impact stormwater management practices that would reduce the volume of stormwater runoff through various infiltration and collection and re-use methods.

The site design included replacing pavement areas with green space; redirecting downspouts to planting beds; connecting the downspouts to rain barrels; constructing rain gardens; installing deep rooted plantings between the street and public walk to absorb runoff from the pavement; and designing permeable pavement for the parking lot and patio.

The historic James S. Brown Double House underwent a complete exterior and interior restoration. The site and building incorporated sustainable design principles with a focus on providing environmental benefits that include recycled materials, reduced energy usage and sustainable stormwater management and landscape techniques.
